monster who at any moment might writhe in the people's arms, breathe fire and destroy all those who believed that they held this fish in their grasp.
(H.S., St. Louis, Missouri)

This first dream serves well as a keynote for the collection of fish dreams appearing below. In fact, this dream may reflect something of the nature of the Book of Dreams project, generally. We have gone "fishing" for dreams to learn something about the nature of the creatures that live in our "depths." In this case, in particular, we have searched for dreams concerning fish, wondering if by examining the types of dreams in which fish appear, by pondering the behavior of fish in these dreams, we might develop a better understanding of the meaning of the "fish" symbol.

Our project is a cooperative endeavor, requiring the contributions of many, many dreamers. We need your help, your "fishing" skills. Read over the dreams and see if your understanding of the meaning of "fish" is affected by these dreams, and send us your comments. Our own commentary at the end of the collection is but a brief remark based on this small sample of fish dreams. Hunt through your dream diaries and send us more fish dreams to round out the collection.

You might also wish to try this experiment: Review your own dreams concerning fish. Write a letter to your dreams stating your desire to understand the meaning of fish that your dreams portray. Ask your dreams if they might prepare for you a "fish dream" that would clearly portray the meaning fish have for you. Perhaps you will land a big one. For more information on how you can contribute to the Book of Dreams, see page 282.

I am on a houseboat down at the river. A strange man, wearing a black raincoat, black hat, and having white whiskers, is driving the boat. My job is to take the fish off the hooks as we catch them and put them into a square basin. Every time I put them in the basin they jump back into the river or onto me and onto the deck of the boat. I try to catch the fish, but they keep dancing around on the boat.                                           (276-54-4673)

I am fishing on a pier over a river. I hook a large bass. As I land it, I  see  an even  larger  bass  under  the pier. I
