Dear Journal:

For over a year after I had an operation that required follow-up care with antibiotics, I suffered from a chronic vaginal yeast infection, which wouldn’t respond to prescribed medicinal treatment. Someone suggested taking Folic Acid. I read some about this remedy in Adelle Davis’s Let’s Get Well, and began to take Folic Acid in large doses. In a couple of days, I developed strange cramps. Then I had a dream, in which I was in the kitchen moving bowls and bowls of "acid" around, wondering what to do with it all. In another part of the dream, I handed a raggedy kitten some brown bread, with yeast and strawberries in it, and the kitten gobbled it up. Reflecting on this dream, I wondered if the bowls of acid referred to my taking too much Folic Acid, and if perhaps the kitten, who had come to represent for me my physical health, really wanted yeast. So I stopped taking Folic Acid, and began to take yeast tablets. My cramps disappeared right away, and in a few days, the yeast infection had all but cleared up. Since then I’ve read a lot more about such things as bacteria, antibiotics, infections, yeast, Folic Acid, and so on, and I’ve learned that my situation was more complicated than I initially suspected. I don’t mean to imply that I found a perfect cure, but I do believe that once I made an effort to heal myself, my dream came to guide me in a better direction.

realize I’ll have to smooch with this chiropractor, boss, until the mechanic has my car fixed. He then seems sort of attractive after all.

I took the dream’s advice and consulted a chiropractor. His full spinal column X-ray amazed me. I knew it was me because of certain missing teeth and fillings. Both the neck and lower spine were very curved. Evidently the bolt-and-funnel-shaped pieces represented the vertebrae, and the long, floorboard cylinder was the spinal column. The five hours matched the number of treatments I needed, five. These were finished in the third month, March, probably related to three a.m. in the dream. At any rate, I haven’t had the pains in my lower right side since these mechanical adjustments were made!

Not all conditions need professional service; for example, an approaching common cold led to this basic advice in a dream:

A burglar is breaking into my bedroom. I creep out into the garden behind him and start throwing lemons from my tree. He runs back over the fence.

Another bit of common sense advice—a child told this dream to his mother, one of my dream students:

I am captured by the Germans (germs). I am planning an escape. I have some pink chalk and I make marks I can follow later to get away from them.

A few days later when the boy was packing to go to summer camp, his mother made sure he took Pepto-Bismol tablets. These pink, chalk-like tablets came in handy for the boy at camp. He got sick, but he had the escape device ready!
