steering wheels, one for each
side of the front seat. When this concept of two-ness was
discussed with Jean, she acknowledged that it seemed to relate to
the problem between her and Ron regarding domination. The issue
was succinctly illustrated in the dream with the two steering wheels
and led to a focused consideration about who was really "in
the driver's seat" in the marriage.
The youngest of the dream helpers (approximately 21 years of age) had a dream in which she feels very disappointed because her parents are on a rollercoaster. This same helper also described a dream about a family in which the father is a very important man and he has a very strong personality. The mother of this family is very much afraid of him because she feels that he doesn't care for her or the family any more. This dream triggered off a strong feeling of emotional resonance on Jean's part because she had often experienced the fear that Ron might leave her and the family, since he had verbalized several threats along these lines in recent years. Another of the dream helpers reported a dream episode in which a man is boasting about being a fantastic lover and that he is going to leave his steady girlfriend for some sexual flings. This, too, seemed right "on target" in terms of characterizing the aspect of Ron's behavior that Jean had been concerned about since his threats to leave always followed a sexual fling with a younger woman. A clue as to how this situation could possibly be handled was also revealed in this same helper's dream. The girl who was being left by the fantastic lover was displaying great disgust with his behavior while the dreamer had the quiet realization that this was just a phase he was going through and that he would return. The dreamer recognized that this character was too deeply involved at the present moment to be rational, but that in a couple of weeks he would discover the foolishness of his behavior and return. This corresponded quite directly with Ron's behavior since the affairs he had engaged in seemed very intense at the beginning but rather quickly faded out after a few weeks and he continued on in the marriage. Another dream helper had a dream where a boyfriend of whom she is very fond appears but he is in the company of another woman. These were the words recorded in this helper's dream journal, "I think about the non-linear aspects of relationships and the patience that is necessary to allow a relationship to happen. I think that now I must 'ride out' this bad time." This statement was repeatedly returned to by Jean and she felt this theme of patience was one she needed to direct more conscious effort toward in working out her relationship with Ron. 102
