criss-crossing of communalities of elements that occurred with
the dreams of such a group but perhaps a little of the flavor can
be extracted by discussing some of the highlights that occurred
within one such specific group.
The target person was a middle-aged woman whom we will call Jean. Jean had been married for a number of years to Ron, a professional man. Most of their children were old enough to be on their own and one aspect of the problem that Jean was seeking help with dealt with the nature of her future plans, since her motherhood role was drawing to a close. She and Ron had experienced considerable marital turmoil and on a couple of occasions Ron had become emotionally involved with younger women and had threatened to leave the marriage. Jean therefore sought help for how to develop a more harmonious relationship with her husband. Both Jean and Ron were characterized by their friends as being rather strong- willed and forceful personalities and their marriage had been a history of many head-on collisions in which power and domination seemed to represent the major issues. Among Jean's dreams of that night was one where she and all her dream helpers are in an arts and crafts shop looking over what items were available. Jean is the only one making any decisions or purchases. In another dream Jean is attending a Russian folk dance in a theatre with a large number of people in the audience.One of the dream helpers had two dreams and in the first one she is in a large auditorium with many people and in the second she is attending a movie. This helper also reported that she sees a map of Africa. Another helper had a dream about a family in Germany while another helper dreamed about traveling through many foreign establishments where she keeps bumping into this same couple. The fourth helper dreamed about being in Washington, D.C., at a convention where a large number of people are in attendance.Three of the four helpers made a reference to some sort of foreign location which may have been tied in with the Russian dancers in Jean's dream and two of the helpers were in large auditorium- like settings. There thus appeared to be some similarities between the helpers' dreams and the dreams that Jean had. As the dreams were recounted, the helpers noted several recurrent themes. One dealt with the concept of "two-ness." One helper had dreams about an unusual two-pronged bamboo rice holder; another helper reported a conflict where he has to decide which of two conventions to attend since both are scheduled at the same time; another helper dreamed about an unusual car which has two 101
