Ego and the autonomous,
guiding Self. Now
the
dreamer, as priest mediating this relationship, can bless
the Shadow, absolve it of its
sin, and accept it as a
member of the family.
George returning
from the dead provides
an
additional wrinkle. It seems to suggest that the
dreamer
felt that the problem of not dealing with
little things as
they come up had been solved in his life. He felt,
to use
the dream image, that it was a dead issue and that
it had
passed into a realm where it would not
need attention
in daily life. It's no wonder,
then, that the Shadow
character was not recognized immediately.
The dream
seems to say that not only is
such a problem never
completely beyond the need for attention, but the better
one feels about having solved it, the
more easily it can
again become active.
Multi-Level
Interpretation
Note the multi-level nature of this dream. We
see,
both from what has been said and from
what follows,
that the interpretation of the dream
cannot proceed at
any single level. Rather, it requires an agile playfulness
among several.
First, the way we
have been discussing the dream
is at a kind of impersonal level. It
exists as a level of
abstraction or generalization just beyond
the personal.
This is the general theme or
theory presented by the
dream regarding the methodology of dealing
with the
Shadow. This material is applicable
to any individual,
not just the dreamer.
Second, there is the detailed,
everyday personal level
of interpretation. This amounts to taking the impersonal
interpretation, the theory, and
applying it to the
dreamer's daily life. It is also at this level
that we can
see the dream working over a long period
of time and
pressing to be understood.
The dream came at a time in the
dreamer's life when
a particular situation seemed to demand the suppression
of many kinds of feelings, both
good and bad. It is
