revelation of the truth acts like these rods,  subduing the
violent activity.  But inserting the  rods does not remove
the  danger  inherent   in   this  critical  mass  of  nuclear
material. Neither does  the truth  alone drive out the evil
possessing the Shadow.

Redemption

From the dream we see that the Ego is now in control,
but  the Shadow  is still  possessed  by  evil. Even though
the Shadow has been subdued, he  is still  not recognized
as part   of   the  dreamer's   family.  The   dreamer   does
recognize that the figure is not  all evil, and  he seeks  to
exorcise   that   evil   by  drawing  on   the  archaic  ritual
depths, the ancient Latin rites. However, not only  is this
to no avail since  he can't  remember the  proper rite, but
it is unnecessary.
This is a time of discrimination for the Ego, a time of
recognizing and separating the  good from  the evil. And,
says  the  dream,  even  though  the  ancient  symbols are
used,  they  must  be set  in  the dreamer's contemporary
idiom, his daily life.
"Satan  . . ."     cries    the    dreamer     authoritatively,
recognizing  the  archetypal   force   involved . "Lord   of
Darkness, Lord  of  Fire ..." he  continues,  honoring  and
respecting  that horrid  strength  whose  aim  is darkness,
regression and stagnation. Yet,  he  also  recognizes  that
the   evil   contains    within   itself   both   the    light   of
consciousness  and  the fire which  readies  the  Ego  for
tempering.   Now   having  established   his  authority  by
demonstrating  full consciousness  of  the  situation,  the
dreamer commands the evil to leave.
Here    we    recognize    a    duality    or    perhaps     a
transformation in the nature of the dreamer himself. The
lowly Ego can  never stand  alone  against  the archetypal
evil.  The Ego crosses himself  for  protection  and gives
way to, or actually merges  with and becomes, the priest,
a  willing  servant  of  the  Self. That  is,  the  dreamer, as
conscious  Ego,  recognizes  his powerlessness  to stand
alone,  recognizes  that  he  does  not  have  the  power to
repress. Seeing this,  he stops behaving egotistically  and
