say that a person has a
dream of a tiger. We find no
mention of a tiger in the
chart; however, we note the
relationship of the lion to the adrenals and the similarity
of the tiger to the lion. Perhaps
a symbol in another
dream is a kitten instead of a tiger. We may still wonder
about a possible relationship of
this type of animal to
the adrenals. We can then ask, "How would
relating the
symbol of the kitten to the qualities of adrenal
activity
enhance our understanding of the dream?"
Working with the possible relationship
of the symbol
to the adrenals, we can inquire into our activities
of the
past few days or, more importantly,
those of the next
few days to come; we would focus on those happenings
in which the feelings and emotions
associated with
adrenal activity might be centrally involved. If in another
dream within the same time span
the dreamer has a
dream of a fire, at first
being comfortably warm and
later getting out of control, we may
now have a way of
confirming an interpretation that there
is an ongoing
emotional process related to the
adrenals. We may
tentatively associate the kitten with the small, warm
fire
and the tiger with the later, more potentially destructive
one.
This simplified illustration
shows how the various
items on the chart above can serve as
entry points and
possible correlating symbols to help identify the
major
emotional themes of dreams. Having
begun with this
entry point as a springboard, we can then pursue a fuller
interpretation of the dream sequence in these
terms. If
we find that such an entry leads
us into stretching the
interpretation beyond what the dream is saying, we
may
freely discard this entry and look for another.
Notice the great difference
between the naive, fixed
interpretation of saying that cats
in dreams symbolize
adrenal activity and the more sophisticated approach
of
saying that the possible association may be utilized
as a
tentative entry into the dream. The suggested association
thus becomes a beginning point for
further reflection
about the area of the dreamer's life to which
the dream
may relate.
