very definite guidelines to follow in
using the ratings.
There are seven categories, or
rating values, in this
system: Zero (0), Awareness
(A), Indefinite (I),
Fragmentary (F), Partial (P), Majority (M), and
Whole
(W). Here are the explanations and guidelines for using
this system:
Zero
(0) "I don't recall dreaming
at all." This is the
easiest category
to define, and is used on those
mornings when
you awaken with no recollection
of dreaming.
Not only are you unable to recall
a
dream, but
also you have no recollection of having
dreamed at all.
Awareness (A): "I know
I was dreaming, but I can't
recall anything
of the dream itself." The awareness
rating (A)
is used on those mornings when there is
awareness of
having dreamed but
without any
recall of
the dream. Both the zero and awareness
categories
apply to mornings without any
dream
recall, but
the awareness category is different
in
that it
represents at least an awareness
that there
was dreaming.
We've all had mornings when
we
wake up, and
then go about our business, without
any awareness
whatsoever that we might
have
been dreaming
that night; or mornings when we
wake up,
hoping to have had a dream, but find
not
even the
slightest clue to suggest that
we have
been dreaming
these mornings would receive the
zero rating.
On the other hand,
we've often
awakened with
the feeling that we were dreaming,
but try
as we might, we can't retrieve
even the
vaguest
memory of the dream. These
mornings
receive the
awareness rating. Awareness mornings
represent a
seemingly small, but
nevertheless
significant,
improvement over zero mornings
in
terms of attunement
to dreams.
Indefinite (I): "I know I was dreaming, yet all
I can recall
is the
vague feeling of distress (or,
"... all I can
recall is
the image of a threatening face . . . "), and
I don't
know what the dream
was about." The
