tapped a deeper level of the mind, what is known as the "collective
unconscious." An eagle may appear in his dreams, perhaps, as
a high flying ideal; a lion may appear to symbolize strength
and courage; an old, bearded man in classic robes is wisdom
incarnate. These are symbols to be taken literally perhaps.
The thoughtful man now goes back to his earlier dream recordings with their literal terms and interprets the objects he has seen in them as symbols of states or conditions occurring within himself. A new lucidity springs from the pages. Many times the way in which a condition is reported will be the clue to what part of the body, mind, or spirit is calling for attention and corrective action. As color is added and contact established with the highest self, ones education can really begin in a consistent fashion. One begins to work with that part of the self which is closest to the Universal Forces. This, in general, is the pattern of progression of the dedicated man who sets himself to know himself in patience and prayerful persistence. What forms his "education" will take depends mostly upon his urgent need, that need which has emotional content. The following is an account, from my own dream record, of a cycle of dreams which had its beginning in a personal way and led into what turned out to be a kind of lecture course on Life after Death. Dreams View Death Three days before my fathers death, in 1953, I dreamed that a woman appeared to me on the staircase of his home in Philadelphia. She said, "I come to offer condolences on the death," and continued on her way upstairs. End of dream. My father had been ill for some time. The end had seemed imminent time and again, but when I went away for the weekend of that week, I took enough clothes with me to see me through a possible trip to Philadelphia in case the warning was realized. No time of fulfillment was given, but the Cayce readings state that in many cases the deceased will appear in a dream to the loved ones to reassure them, after three days. In a general way I reckoned the time of Dads death to fall on Saturday; in this case, three days after the warning. The news came at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and the following day we left for Philadelphia directly from there, exactly on schedule. (This is an example of a simple prophetic dream.) I found that my father had died in a coma, that he had passed on without knowing what was happening. The third night following his death came and went without a dream of any sort. On the fifth night I had a dream which showed him 211
