have appeared in the pages of The Journal of Psychical Research and The
Journal of the American Society of Psychical Research. They present a strong
argument that precognitive dreams do occur. Examination of these published precognitive
cases indicates that symbolism is featured in only about 10% of them and their
imagery would be more accurately characterized as realistic in nature.
The Maimonides Dream Laboratory carried out two major studies on precognitive dreams (4, 5). Both studies utilized a young British sensitive, Malcolm Bessent. Malcolm is a man in his late 20s, who received his training at the College of Psychic Studies in London. He had contributed to the Central Premonitions Registry several predictions that were subsequently confirmed. In order to test for precognition, the Maimonides staff asked Bessent to attempt to dream about a "future" situation, which he would experience the following day. At the time he was dreaming, no one knew what that experience would be. After all his dreams of the night had been recorded and mailed off to a transcriber, an assistant, who had had no contact with Bessent or his dreams, randomly created an experience for Bessent to participate in. This experience was classified as "multi- sensory," since several different modes of sensory expression were employed. Once, the randomly selected theme featured Van Goghs "Hospital Corridor at St. Remy." Bessents experience consisted of listening to a recording of "Spellbound," while taking a pill with a glass of water and viewing paintings by mental patients. He was then disinfected with acetone and led through a darkened corridor of the lab by someone wearing a doctors white coat. In his dreams of the preceding night he had referred to being in a large concrete building from which a patient upstairs was trying to escape. In another dream he mentioned there were doctors and medical people present. In still another dream he reported something about drinking and eating. He also had the impression that in his dream he had done something which created a feeling of resentment by others and caused them to think or say "get rid of him." On another occasion, the target theme involved "birds." There were 11 slides depicting birds in water, on land, and in the air. No particular type of bird was emphasized, but the slides brought out the variety of different colors and species of birds. While the slides were being shown, various types of bird calls were being played on the sound tape. Here are some excerpts from Bessents dreams the night before the bird sequence was randomly selected and presented to him: 182
